Test Automation Portal

2018 • UX/UI DESIGN

I had the opportunity to intern with a Fortune 500 insurance company as a UX Designer over summer 2018. On one of my projects I was responsible for redesigning the interface of the test automation portal used by quality assurance testers.

Tools: Sketch, Illustrator

The Redesign Goal

The goal of the redesign was to improve the quality assurance process in terms of accuracy, speed, and reporting. The main challenge of this goal was finding a way to organize a massive hierarchy of information in an intuitive manner.

The Design Process

Gather Requirements

As the lead UX designer on this project, I needed to familiarize myself with the existing portal through discussions with the the quality assurance users. Through this collaboration, I learned the purpose of the portal, how it was utilized, where improvement was needed, and new features that the users wanted.

Define the Problem

Walking into this project, it was evident that there was a need for improvement on the existing portal. The portal lacked a proper information architecture, which made it difficult to navigate the application as an end user. In addition to the lack of IA, the portal was in need of a fresh redesign that made completing tasks intuitive rather than frustrating.

Ideate and Prototype Solutions

After gathering requirements for a particular section of the portal, I brainstormed possible solutions by drawing rough sketches and mocking up some low-mid fidelity wireframes. During this ideation phase, I often consulted with other UX designers to get their feedback.

Receive Feedback and Improve Design

After I developed possible design solutions, I presented these solutions to the UX team and the Portal Redesign team for additional feedback. From there I took any constructive feedback to improve the design.

Challenges

The information architecture of this page was the most significant challenge faced during this redesign. The portal is used to display data with several levels of drill-down information, which presented a problem when designing.

Information hierarchy of portal projects

The challenge was to show the user where they're located within the portal, in a concise and understandable way. This proved to be difficult due to the levels of drill-down information and the use of arbitrary naming conventions for the various projects, suites and cases, which could result in the names being lengthy and difficult to fit comfortably on the screen. To find a solution I went through several breadcrumb/heading design iterations that could potentially solve the problem, while also complying with the UX design patterns. Through a series of design review sessions with the UX team, we were able to come to a final solution.

This image is displaying the furthest point a user can be drilled down into information. This solution provides the user with the specific heading name of each step they are within, as well as breadcrumb links to jump to various selection points.

The New Portal Experience

Presenting an elaborate hierarchy of information in a logical, useful, and clean experience.
